Summary

Brian Cook's landscape illustrations from the 1930s, 40s and 50s—with their heightened use of color—have become iconic。 This stunning collection, newly released in a special compact edition, gathers his very best work。 It includes commentary by Cook on his working methods, the printing process that allowed him to create his characteristic bold hues, and the design principles of his craft。 A stunning book for designers, collectors, and any lover of landscape art。

Exceptionally quick read (collection of iconic pictures and book jackets from 1930s and 40s), with an unexpectedly interesting story about the artist in the intro by his son-in-law。

A beautiful little volume showcasing Brian Cook's iconic scenes of Britain。 A short introduction by his son-in-law precedes several lovely paintings。 A beautiful little volume showcasing Brian Cook's iconic scenes of Britain。 A short introduction by his son-in-law precedes several lovely paintings。 。。。more

Since it looks like I won't be back in Britain any time soon, looking at this is the next best thing (or better, given current circumstances in Britain)。 Since it looks like I won't be back in Britain any time soon, looking at this is the next best thing (or better, given current circumstances in Britain)。 。。。more

As a fan of Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages, I have enjoyed the artwork of Brian Cook Batsford。 This is a nice little brief history of the books from Batsford Publishing featuring the artwork that Brian Cook did for the dust jacket。 It reminds me of some of the artwork that we saw in the 1950's in children's books in the US。 Not a lot of reading, but much eye candy。 As a fan of Penelope Keith's Hidden Villages, I have enjoyed the artwork of Brian Cook Batsford。 This is a nice little brief history of the books from Batsford Publishing featuring the artwork that Brian Cook did for the dust jacket。 It reminds me of some of the artwork that we saw in the 1950's in children's books in the US。 Not a lot of reading, but much eye candy。 。。。more

I've recently watched the Penelope Keith series Hidden Villages (on Acorn TV)。 The series is based on the 1930s Batsford guides to England, and the photography is stunning。 The original books featured the art of Sir Brian Cook Batsford, but most of the guides are out of print。 This book, Brian Cook's Landscapes of Britain beautifully shows many of Cook's lovely illustrations。(Note: My copy has a turquoise band across the bottom rather than the red band pictured in Goodreads。 Turns out there are I've recently watched the Penelope Keith series Hidden Villages (on Acorn TV)。 The series is based on the 1930s Batsford guides to England, and the photography is stunning。 The original books featured the art of Sir Brian Cook Batsford, but most of the guides are out of print。 This book, Brian Cook's Landscapes of Britain beautifully shows many of Cook's lovely illustrations。(Note: My copy has a turquoise band across the bottom rather than the red band pictured in Goodreads。 Turns out there are two books--but only one listed in Goodreads。 The red border on the bottom is the larger book: 11。8 x 1 x 9 inches。 The turquoise band is on a smaller book: about 8 x 。8 x 6。2。 Both books have 144 pages。 The two volumes appear to have identical artwork。) 。。。more

Beautiful illustrations in 'flat' colours。 An amazing style of art that shows what can be done with simple colours。 Yet the colour combinations should not work, but they do。 The drawings with perspective are deceptively simple looking。 The content of the book is simply the art with a small piece on Cook at the start。 Lovely Beautiful illustrations in 'flat' colours。 An amazing style of art that shows what can be done with simple colours。 Yet the colour combinations should not work, but they do。 The drawings with perspective are deceptively simple looking。 The content of the book is simply the art with a small piece on Cook at the start。 Lovely 。。。more

A great reference study of one of my favourite british artists from the 20th century。 Absolutely beautiful work, that has inspired the great work of the likes of Paul Catherall。
